Corruption: Influence of organizational cynicism and emotional competence of the evaluation of corruption

  • The present work investigates on an empirical basis the criminal offence of corruption. Using a vignette-based survey 89 students of business administration and 74 of information systems have been examined about their evaluation of corruption. In addition to socio-demographic variables, the survey also includes the personal factors of organizational cynicism (Abhari, 2007) and emotional competence (Rindermann, 2008) as well as the situational factor of personal distress (sick child) versus non-personal distress (unemployed wife). This document is a revised version of the original bachelor thesis, which was issued in March 2012 with the same title at the Hochschule Hannover, faculty of economics and computer science, department of business administration. The work was supervised by Sina Maffenbeier and Sven Litzcke. The results show that volunteering has a positive effect of the willingness to report corrupt actions whereas high organizational cynicism has the opposite effect. Due to the fact that there are no direct victims, the willingness to report corruption is an important factor in fighting the crime. The results also show that high organizational cynicism leads to a more difficult decision making process for or against corruption and high emotional competence simplifies the decision making process. On top of that the subjective perception about the frequency of corrupt offers increases in the case of high emotional competence. Furthermore the results show that the decision making process is more difficult for people in the situation of a personal distress (sick child) than in the situation of a non-personal distress (unemployed wife). People also have more sympathy for corrupt actions in the situation of a personal distress (sick child).
