N2 - In the context oft the current public and political dispute on education museums and libraries distinguish themselves increasingly as active protagonists in the field of cultural education. Because of their differentiated offers of services and content they act both as institutions of the formal and extracurricular education market and the leisure market, in each case at the political, economical and social micro-, meso- and macroscopic level. In this context especially the many museums that run an own library have a significantly increased possibility within the framework of their more and more professional strategy of public relations to offer their (potential) heterogeneous visitors and additional target groups advanced and additive contents and services, furthermore to so position the institution in its urban space with a direct effect on public attention by planning and designing their library as an information and communication centre as well as positioning and anchoring this so-formed centre within the product and communication policy oft he museum. Such an extensively acting museum library, revisioned both structurally and programmatically as a professional administrated central (cultural) contact point with an integrative and coordinating character in the museum building opens up new possibilities and opportunities for the public to communicate and to learn, may it be in an educational or an entertaining way – or yet comprehensively in both elements.
